TITLE: What My Internship Taught Me That University Didn't
QUESTION: Can you be academically successful and still struggle in the real world?
HOOK: A few days ago, my supervisor asked me a question.
It wasn't even a difficult question.
It was something I'd technically learned before.
But I just... froze.
And in that moment, I realized something uncomfortable.
There's a huge difference between passing exams and actually thinking like an engineer.
LINES
1. I don't think university failed me. I think university gave me the language of engineering. But the workplace is teaching me how to actually speak it.
2. Knowing something isn't the same as understanding it.
3. Passing an exam proves you studied. Explaining an idea proves you understand it.
4. There's a difference between remembering information and thinking with it.
5. My internship didn't expose that I wasn't smart. It exposed how much more there is to learn.
6. I wasn't embarrassed because I didn't know everything. I was surprised by how differently knowledge feels outside the classroom.
7. Maybe the goal isn't to become the smartest student. Maybe it's to become someone who can solve problems.
OUTLINE
• THE STORY
Where were you?
What were you doing?
What question did he ask?
How did you feel?
• THE REALISATION
"I've always been good at exams." "But real life doesn't ask exam questions."
Explain how different those environments feel.
• WHY THIS HAPPENS
Declarative knowledge vs procedural knowledge
Recall vs application
Cognitive load
Transfer of learning
Expertise develops through practice
Why internships matter
• WHAT I’M DOING DIFFERENTLY
• Instead of memorizing…I'm asking "Why?"
• Instead of stopping after solving a question...I'm asking "Where would this happen in real life?"
• Instead of chasing grades...I'm trying to build understanding.
CLOSING: Have you ever realized there was a gap between what you knew and what you could actually do?
RESEARCH
1. Transfer of learning
2. Declarative vs procedural knowledge
3. Retrieval practice
4. Cognitive load theory
5. The Dunning-Kruger Effect
6. How experts think differently from beginners.
