[Webinar] Dr. Chloe Slocum and Dr. Jennifer Oshita

[Webinar] Jennifer Oshita, PhD, CCC-SLP, and Chloe Slocum, MD, MPH, present "Implementation of a Health-Related Social Needs Screening in a large inpatient rehabilitation facility." In response to overwhelming evidence showing that adverse social conditions contribute to health outcomes, federal policies are incentivizing screening for patient’s health-related social needs (e.g. food insecurity, housing instability). In the fall of 2026, a Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) pay-for-reporting rule on health-related social needs will take effect in inpatient rehabilitation facilities. MassGeneral Brigham Spaulding Rehabilitation was an early adopter, piloting social needs screening starting in 2022 and scaling this practice across inpatient settings in 2024. This webinar will provide a background of these efforts and the LeaRRn quality improvement project identifying barriers, facilitators, and proposed strategies supporting adoption at Spaulding Rehabilitation Boston. Audience members will gain insights to improve implementation of the impending CMS policy on screening for social needs at their own institutions. Dr. Oshita is a post-doctoral fellow at NYU Langone Health and Dr. Slocum is a staff physician at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital.
