Alonzo Janes - Tula Strong & David Brägger

Rehearsing "Alonzo Janes" for an upcoming concert with my amazing student Tula Strong. Tula is a fabulous singer, dancer, choreographer and banjo player! We decided to try this tune with gourd banjo and viola in a low C tuning. I originally learned this tune from one of my early mentors, Illinois fiddler Mel Durham. Mel learned this directly from the once-enslaved fiddler Alonzo Janes (1850-1937). Alonzo played and swapped tunes regularly with the Durham family in the early 20th century. His tunes are very important to me, so I've been sharing them and teaching them to students for two decades now.
