Every day, I take my father outside for a walk. Many of the roads where I live are rough concrete roads, with a lot of sand and gravel on the surface. It feels almost like walking on a file. Before long, the soles of my shoes were worn down unevenly, and the wear had even reached the inside.
Later, when I took my father to central Pattaya, I found a small roadside shoe repair stand. I paid 150 baht to have the shoes repaired.
The whole repair process took about an hour. The repairman didn't use any complicated electric tools. He did almost everything by hand. While I waited for my shoes to be repaired, I sat there on the side of the street, watching my father, the cars, and the people, and getting a look at the everyday life of ordinary people in Thailand.
There was also a little episode at the end of the repair. The repairman didn't have enough change, so he took the money I gave him and went to the 7-Eleven across the street to buy a small can of glue.
This little incident also reminded me of something from my childhood.
When I was four or five years old, my family was still going through a difficult time. One day, my grandmother made a bowl of milk porridge for my second-oldest brother. It smelled so good, and I really wanted to taste it. But it was something his school gave him to help him stay healthy. I could only watch him eat it, one spoonful at a time, until he finished the whole thing. He even scraped the pot completely clean with his finger.
Maybe that experience has something to do with why I've always liked milk so much.
So that's my little story about getting my shoes repaired in Thailand. It's also just an ordinary day in the life that my father and I are living here in Thailand.
Thank you for watching!
