Somewhere in your house right now there's a black spoon, a broken chain or a coffee can of old dimes that's headed for a donation bag. I ran an estate-sale company in Minnesota for 35 years, about 2,000 homes, and I've watched a lot of those bags go out the door. The bigger Goodwills pull jewelry, coins and collectibles in the back room and sell them online. The money is real. It just lands in their register instead of yours.
After 35 years running estate sales and clearing about 2,000 homes, here are nine things in an older home I'd never let go in a donation bag until somebody has checked them.
In this video:
1. Sterling silver, and how to tell it from silver plate
2. Gold jewelry, especially the broken pieces
3. The coin jar and old silver coins
4. Pockets, linings and pages, where cash and savings bonds hide
5. Old cast iron, Griswold and Wagner
6. Original paintings and signed art
7. Watches and pocket watches
8. Signed costume jewelry
9. China, crystal and silver patterns, plus what a charity won't take at all
Tell me in the comments: go flip your skillet over and type the name on the bottom, or BLANK if there's nothing there. I want to know who's been frying eggs in a Griswold all these years.
If you're the one who still decides what leaves your house, subscribe. Every week I share what I learned walking through about 2,000 homes, the things a buyer standing in your kitchen isn't going to volunteer.
So before the next bag goes in the trunk, give it the loop, the scale and ten minutes, and then give away the rest knowing exactly what you gave.
