In the early part of our country’s history, our economy was heavily based on the family farm. To help fill the labor needs of planting and harvesting seasons, parents would often have to pull their children out of school, resulting in high illiteracy rates throughout rural areas. In 1911, a young woman in Morehead, KY came up with an idea designed to attack adult illiteracy, a program that would be welcome not only by the citizens of Rowan County, but one that would spread across the nation….
