Flood crisis: Umuenwelum Anam Residents Seek Urgent Intervention

Every year, when the floodwaters rise, life in Umuenwelum Anam, Anambra West Local Government Area of Anambra State, is severely disrupted. In this compelling field interview, farmers, elders, women and young people from the community share their firsthand experiences of the devastating effects of annual flooding on their homes, farms, livelihoods, education and daily lives. For farming families, flooding means destroyed crops, lost income and uncertainty about the next harvest. For women, children and elderly residents, it creates additional challenges in accessing basic necessities and moving safely within the community. Young people also speak about the impact on their livelihoods and future prospects. The residents are using this opportunity to appeal to the Anambra State Government, the Federal Government and relevant agencies to urgently address the recurring flooding and provide sustainable interventions to protect communities, farmland and livelihoods. This is more than a story about water—it is a story about people, resilience and a community asking to be heard.
