Dummy! | UNDERTALE | WMGSO's Fall 2025 Full Ensemble Concert

Dummy! - UNDERTALE (2015) By: Toby Fox Arr. Jamin Morden There's almost no way to avoid a confrontation with the ghost who lives inside a dummy in UNDERTALE; he's just too angry at you! Sharing melodic material with a couple other themes in the game, "Dummy!" presents itself in a frenetic, jazzy style. Composer Toby Fox achieves this style with a walking (almost running?) bassline, a swinging melody, and lots of jazzy interjections from the winds. An interesting thing to note is that the ghost living inside the dummy will often exclaim his lines three times (foolish. Foolish! FOOLISH!). This is reflected in the music, since several phrases are played three times before moving on to the next phrase. This arrangement calls on the full forces of WMGSO in both small, "jazz combo" moments, as well as raucous "big band" moments. As is appropriate to the style, players are given the opportunity to improvise over the chord changes, followed by a very small jazz fugue, which leads us back to the beginning of the tune. Finally, a small ensemble of players provide the coda to the piece before leaving, just like our angry ghost friend, in a bit of a huff.
