Gary Anderson opened the scoring with a 45 yard field goal. The Chargers answered with a Billy Joe Tolliver two yard touchdown pass to Gary Plummer. As the game moved to the second quarter, Brister threw touchdown passes to Eric Green of one and eight yards giving the Steelers a 17-7 halftime lead. Pittsburgh extended the lead in the third quarter when Warren Williams scored on a two yard run. The Chargers Les Miller recovered a fumble in the end zone cutting the Steelers lead to 24-14 as the game moved to the fourth quarter. In the final quarter, the Steelers just put the game away. They blocked a punt out of the end zone for a safety. Anderson added another field goal and Barry Foster capped the scoring with a two yard run. Brister completed 11 of 14 for 132 yards before leaving with a rib injury. Rick Strom replaced him and was 7 of 11 for 68 yards.
