In 1835, Ohio and Michigan sent about 1,600 armed men to fight over a strip of swamp. The only wound of the Toledo War? A penknife.
Mini Fiascos #1 · History's biggest fiascos, explained.
A bad map, a 23-year-old "Boy Governor" named Stevens T. Mason, and an Ohio governor who never lost an argument (according to himself). The Toledo War had dueling laws, a "battle" where nobody got hurt, a midnight court, and a president doing electoral math. Michigan "lost" Toledo and got stuck with a frozen forest called the Upper Peninsula, which turned out to be full of copper and iron.
