Wesley So vs Hans Niemann — U.S. Chess Championship 2025, Round 1! Wesley So and Hans Niemann faced each other in the opening round of the 2025 U.S. Chess Championship at the newly expanded Saint Louis Chess Club in St. Louis, Missouri. The game ended in a draw, with both players showing strong preparation. Hans Niemann later explained that the game entered a line he had previously played in blitz against Alireza Firouzja at Norway Chess, and the position simplified relatively quickly. But the game became famous for something completely unexpected: sunlight from a skylight was shining directly into the players' eyes during the game. Chief Arbiter Chris Bird actually brought out an umbrella and held it over the board to block the sunlight, creating one of the most unusual moments of the championship. Niemann joked that it made him feel like “the president of a small country.” The 2025 U.S. Championship was a 12-player round-robin held in St. Louis from October 12–24, with a $250,000 Open-section prize fund. ♟️ Game: Wesley So vs Hans Niemann 🏆 Event: U.S. Chess Championship 2025 📍 Location: Saint Louis Chess Club, St. Louis 📅 Round: 1 ⚔️ Result: Draw ☀️ Memorable moment: Chief Arbiter Chris Bird uses an umbrella to block the sunlight Watch the full game and experience one of the most unusual moments from the 2025 U.S. Chess Championship!
