Back to Cairn Curran After 30 Years! | From Trout & Redfin to Murray Cod & Yellas.....

This one is a bit special for the Fatboy. The Fatboy and the Big Bear Jas head to Cairn Curran Reservoir in Central Victoria, and for the Fatboy it's a return to a place he hasn't fished for around three decades. Back then, Cairn Curran was a renowned Victorian trout and redfin destination. It was well stocked with brown trout and had a reputation as a fabulous redfin fishery. But things have changed. The trout fishery eventually went "on the nose" as far as stocking was concerned, while the fishery has gradually developed into something very different — a very good native fish destination, with yellowbelly and Murray cod now providing the main attraction. And for Murray cod anglers, Cairn Curran has another big attraction: it's an "always open" cod fishery, making it an option for both local and visiting anglers outside the seasonal closures that apply to many other Victorian waterways. So this trip is a bit of a trip down memory lane for the Fatboy, while also discovering what Cairn Curran has become today. But there's one thing we couldn't help wondering about… Where have all the redfin gone? Once such a feature of Cairn Curran, they certainly don't seem to be what they used to be. Have the native fish had something to do with their decline? Or is there another explanation?
