NOT THIS TIME | I CHOOSE ME
How hard is it to say “no” when you've spent your whole life saying “yes”?
“NOT THIS TIME” is Track 02 of I CHOOSE ME, a dark alternative rock album about emotional exhaustion, one-sided relationships, boundaries, and learning to choose yourself without losing your kindness.
She's always been the person everyone could count on. The one who put others first, even when she had nothing left to give.
But this time, she says no.
And instead of feeling free, she feels guilty. She wonders if she's selfish, if she's changed, if protecting herself means she's become a bad person.
This song is about the painful struggle between caring for others and finally caring for yourself. It's about realizing that saying no doesn't mean you stopped loving someone — it means your own needs matter, too.
You can be kind without sacrificing yourself. You can care without carrying everyone else's pain. And you have the right to say no.

🎤 LYRICS
[Verse 1]
My phone lights up, the same familiar voice,
Another broken heart, another desperate choice.
"You've always helped me, you've never turned away,
So how can you refuse me? What changed today?"
I take a breath, I search for words to say,
But for the first time, I turn your plea away.
And somehow this one little word, this simple "no,"
Feels heavier than all the pain I've ever known.
[Pre-Chorus]
I stare at my phone, the silence feels so loud.
Why do I feel like I've betrayed you somehow?
I'm only tired, I'm only human too.
Why does saying no feel like a crime to you?
[Chorus]
Why am I guilty when I say no?
Why do your problems weigh more than my own?
Why am I afraid to let somebody down,
As if I owe the world everything I've got?
I don't want to hurt you, I don't want to lose you,
I don't want to be someone you don't value.
But if I have to break myself to make you stay,
How many more times must I give myself away?
Why am I guilty?
Why am I guilty for saying no?
[Verse 2]
Your silence cuts much deeper than a scream,
As if I've ruined everything you've ever seen in me.
"I thought that I could always count on you..."
And now I'm searching for excuses to get through.
Maybe I'm selfish. Maybe I've changed.
Maybe protecting myself has made me cold.
I replay every word, each moment in my mind,
Searching for the place where I crossed some line.
I learned to say yes when I had nothing left,
To smile for everyone while losing my breath.
And now that I've chosen a moment of peace,
I feel like I've abandoned someone in need.
[Pre-Chorus 2]
But who ever asked if I had the strength?
Who saw me breaking underneath the weight?
Why must I keep proving time and time again
That I have the right to protect myself?
[Bridge — Soft, Vulnerable]
I'm not used to choosing myself.
I'm scared you'll leave like everybody else.
That you'll turn away, that you'll disappear,
That without my help, I won't matter here.
I've measured my worth by the things I could do,
By how much I gave, by how much I pulled through.
I was so afraid of being the bad one,
I forgot how to be honest with myself.
[Build-Up — Growing Intensity]
If I'm exhausted, is that a crime?
If I'm hurting, don't I deserve some time?
If I can't help you today, can't you understand?
Does that mean I've stopped caring, does that make me bad?
I want to help when I have the strength.
I want to stay when I can truly be there.
But I shouldn't have to disappear inside
Just to make it easier for you to survive.
[Final Chorus — Powerful Female Vocals]
I won't be guilty just for saying no!
My needs and my feelings matter too!
I don't owe the world my every breath,
I don't have to earn respect through self-neglect!
I can love you and still refuse,
I can be kind and protect myself too.
And if you decide that I'm no longer the same,
That doesn't mean I'm the one to blame!
I'm still afraid...
But I won't stay silent.
I'm still unsure...
But I won't betray myself again.
And even if it's hard,
Even if it takes time,
I have the right to say NO!
[Outro — Quiet, Fragile, Resolute]
I have the right...
To say no...
Even if you never understand.
Even if you walk away...
I have the right
To remain myself.

You have the right to protect your peace.
You have the right to say no.
