In September 1981, Das Boot opened in Munich, and 660,000 people saw it in its first weekend. Its star was a real submarine: U-96. In the autumn of 1941 she sailed from occupied France with a war correspondent aboard, and everything he saw became a novel, then the film. But you will not find U-96 in any naval museum. Nothing of the real boat is known to survive. The most complete U-96 left on Earth is a film set outside Munich, and the full-size boat built for the film was lent to Raiders of the Lost Ark, sank in a storm, and then vanished from the record. This video covers: the real U-96: Type VII C, Kiel 1940, Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock and the laughing sawfish Lothar-Günther Buchheim's 41 days aboard, and what really happened on the seventh patrol (Bennekom, Gibraltar) how U-96 ended: a training boat, decommissioned, bombed in Wilhelmshaven in March 1945 the captain's long second life, from merchant ships to the nuclear ship Otto Hahn the novel, the American version Buchheim vetoed, and how Wolfgang Petersen made the film La Pallice, the real U-boat base at La Rochelle the full-size boat's loan to Raiders of the Lost Ark, the storm, and the finale the walk-through set at Bavaria Filmstadt the 2018 series boat, now back at its shipyard in Malta U-995 at Laboe, the closest you can come to walking through U-96, and the other surviving U-boats Chapters 0:00 The real Das Boot 2:04 U-96 goes to war 2:30 Buchheim comes aboard 3:21 The real seventh patrol 4:40 The end of U-96 6:01 What became of the Old Man 7:05 The novel 8:07 Making Das Boot 10:51 La Pallice 12:03 Lent to Raiders of the Lost Ark 13:39 The storm 14:34 Release 15:14 The set you can still walk through 16:51 The lost full-size boat 17:21 The series boat 18:37 U-995: the boat you can board 20:06 The other survivors 20:28 Where the real U-96 is now Have you walked through the Das Boot set in Munich, or gone aboard U-995 at Laboe? Tell me in the comments. Routes on the maps are illustrative. Wartime U-boat film in this video is not footage of U-96 unless it says so; no film of U-96 herself is known to be public.
