A pair of khaki pants spins through the desert air, an RV slides into a ditch, and Walter White records a message to his family before raising a gun at the sirens. Two years later, in a cramped kitchen, he tells Skyler the truth: he did it for himself. Between those two statements, three things came apart.
The family, the empire, and Walter himself. They did not crack on the same day, and this video works out which one broke first.
The trail through the story:
The camcorder confession. The first justification Walt ever puts on tape, before he has made a dollar.
Holly's birth and the hidden money. One point two million from Gus, Jane's threat, and the night Walt watches instead of acting.
After Gus. The offshore account numbers hidden behind a framed photo of Gus, methylamine, distribution, and Mike forced into partnership by nine men in prison.
The pickup truck. Walt taking Holly, hearing her call for her mama, and leaving her safe in a fire truck.
The phone call. The rant with the police listening, and what it was really for.
I did it for me. Why the last confession matters more than the first one.
