The Mongol conquest of China was not a single invasion. It was a decades-long struggle that began under Genghis Khan and ended generations later under his grandson Kublai Khan. To control China, the Mongols had to destroy three powerful imperial states: Western Xia, the Jurchen Jin Dynasty, and the Southern Song Dynasty. Genghis Khan first attacked Western Xia before turning against the Jin Empire, whose fortified cities and enormous armies controlled northern China. After Western Xia was destroyed in 1227, the Mongols continued their war against the Jin. In 1234, an alliance between the Mongols and Southern Song brought the Jin Dynasty to an end—but the former allies soon became enemies. The conquest of Southern Song proved far more difficult. The Mongols had to adapt to China’s rivers, mountains, fortified cities, and naval warfare. The conflict continued through the reigns of several khans until Kublai established the Yuan Dynasty and directed the final assault against the Song. In 1279, the last Song resistance was destroyed. For the first time, the Mongols controlled all of China, completing one of the longest and most difficult conquests in their history. This documentary explores the complete Mongol conquest of China—from Genghis Khan’s first campaigns to the destruction of Western Xia, Jin, and Southern Song and the establishment of Mongol rule under the Yuan Dynasty.
