The Potter shapes the clay, and the Vine supplies the life. This song explores our part: receiving God’s care, remaining close to Jesus, and responding with willing hands in the work He gives.
Part 10 of the Learning Collection — songs and prayers for growing in faith through ordinary life.
Scripture connections: Isaiah 64:8; Jeremiah 18:1–6; John 15:1–17.
These lyrics are devotional poetry and reflection, rather than a word-for-word retelling of every biblical scene.
A question to carry with you: Where are you being invited to receive, remain, or respond?
FULL LYRICS
I came to You with sketches
Of the life I thought I’d lead,
With a place I hoped to finish
And a shape I thought I’d need.
But You saw within the clay
What I could not yet see;
Your hands began a work of love
Much deeper than my dreams.
I’m learning how to trust Your hands
When I don’t understand Your plans.
You are the Potter;
I am the clay.
Teach me to welcome
Your shaping today.
You hold the purpose;
You know the art.
Give me a willing heart—
I’m learning my part.
Sometimes I call it waiting
When You’ve asked me to begin;
Sometimes I keep on striving
When You’re drawing me within.
I want to choose the colors,
Want to say where I belong;
But You can make a vessel
For a place I’ve overlooked.
The work You give these hands to do
Begins with listening to You.
You are the Potter;
I am the clay.
Teach me to welcome
Your shaping today.
You hold the purpose;
You know the art.
Give me a willing heart—
I’m learning my part.
You said You are the living Vine,
And we the branches grow;
Apart from You, I cannot bear
The fruit You long to show.
A branch can never make the life
That rises through the tree;
So teach me to remain in You
As You remain in me.
To keep Your words, to walk Your way,
To let Your love bear fruit today.
You are the living Vine;
Your life flows through.
Teach me to keep
My heart close to You.
You give the growing;
You search my heart.
Help me receive Your life—
I’m learning my part.
When forgiveness asks an answer,
Let me choose to loose my hold.
When a neighbor needs my kindness,
Let Your love move past my door.
When Your pruning meets resistance,
Help me trust Your tender care;
When You call me into service,
Give me courage to be there.
You are the living Vine;
Your life flows through.
Let every small
‘Yes’ draw me closer to You.
Fruit for Your glory,
Love from Your heart—
Faithful in what You give,
I’m learning my part.
Within Your hands,
Within Your love,
Receiving what I cannot start—
And choosing, as You lead me,
I’m learning my part.
