Building LLVM From Source — One Command, 1,487 Files · 1 Hour · 1080p Ambient

A ThinkPad compiling LLVM 17 from source, in real time, from start to finish. About a hundred seconds of typing at the front, ninety at the back, and fifty-seven minutes of compiler output in between. Nothing else happens. cmake configures, make starts, and then it is just the percentage counter climbing and file names going past: Demangle, Support, the tablegen step that generates LLVM's own headers, IR, MC, the DWARF and CodeView readers, Analysis, the whole of Transforms, CodeGen and SelectionDAG, the X86 backend, ORC and JITLink, and seventy static libraries linked one after another before the tools at the end. The configuration is LLVM only — no Clang, X86 only, Release — because that is what makes it an hour rather than three. A heavy C++ file in LLVM takes about ten seconds on this machine, four cores gives 14,400 core-seconds, and 1,487 files is what fits. The pace on screen is not slowed down for effect; it is what this build looks like on a laptop. Then llvm-config reports 17.0.3, llc lists exactly one registered target, and a three-line hello compiles and runs. Fifty-seven minutes for that sentence. Under all of it, warm cassette-tape synth — music only, no typing sounds — and a modem handshake on the way out.
