Las Vegas, Nevada, can only grow where Congress lets it. About nine of every ten acres in Clark County are federal land, and since 1998 the government has been allowed to sell land for building only inside a line Congress drew around the valley. As of mid-2024, about 27,000 acres were left for sale, roughly 40% of the federal land inside that line, according to BLM figures. Auctions have brought in about $3.6 billion, roughly $200,000 for every acre sold. A bill in Congress would add up to 25,000 acres more; its sponsor calls it bipartisan, a Sierra Club leader argued it would encourage sprawl, the Las Vegas Sun reported, and it has only been introduced. Then there's the water: the Southern Nevada Water Authority says about 90% of the valley's water comes from the Colorado River, yet Reclamation's accounting shows Nevada used only about two-thirds of its share in 2025.
