Take a ride in East Texas as we leave Tyler, in Smith County, and drive to Red Springs, also in Smith County, on Texas FM (Farm to Market) Road 14 North. We will drive down this two-lane road that will take us by some RV parks, a tire shop, John Soules Foods, a fireworks stand, storage places, churches, an auto salvage place, Smith County Emergency Services, and many houses. On this sunny, winters day, we will see a few gas stations as we cross over Interstate 20 (I20) and drive by the entrance to Tyler State Park at the yellow flashing light where Park Road 16 intersects FM 14. As we drive further and further from Tyler, we are truly heading into the Piney Woods, with the winding road flanked by many pine trees with an occasional field with hay bales. We will end our drive at the Volunteer Fire Department building in Red Springs, an unincorporated town with a population of about 350 residents.
