For me, mandarins smell like autumn in Mexico. They remind me of late October, Día de Muertos, cempasúchil flowers, pan de muerto, and the beautiful aromas of the season.
But I discovered something fascinating: in other parts of the world, mandarins are strongly connected with winter traditions.
In this episode of Un ratito en español mexicano, we'll travel from Mexico to Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Russia, Poland, and Japan to discover how the same fruit can represent completely different seasons, celebrations, and memories.
🇲🇽 Mexico — Día de Muertos
🇧🇪 Belgium — Sinterklaas
🇳🇱 The Netherlands — Sinterklaas
🇩🇪 Germany — Saint Nicholas
🇪🇸 Spain — autumn and winter mandarin season
🇷🇺 Russia — New Year's celebrations
🇵🇱 Poland — Christmas
🇯🇵 Japan — mikan and kotatsu
