At the northwest corner of The Tarn is a set of wide stone steps into one of which has been carved the name of the trail KURT DIEDERICH'S CLIMB. A memorial trail for a lover of Mount Desert Island and it's mountains the trail was constructed in his memory when he died at the young age of 26. The initial 8 steps lead up into the forest and a dirt path that quickly changes to stone steps (over 700 of them) that slowly begin to climb Dorr Mountain. Quickly they begin to steepen and switch back arriving at a more level places stones path that crosses a mountain runoff stream before leading to a memorial plaque. The trail then climbs more steps to a more exposed level path with views before once again stone steps climb and switch back a few times, steepening even more. Atop these a level dirt path traverses the cliffside before turning rocky and once more has steps appear as a granite wall rises beside it. Turning up again the cliffside path alternates between level ground with dirt paths and yet more stone steps the granite wall to one side and eastern views to the other. The final overview by the trailhead opens to a panorama of the northeast of MDI. Continuing from here are the choices of EMERY PATH (the best and most scenic descent of Dorr Mountain) and SCHIFF PATH that continues toward the summit. HAVE A PLAN... the best times are had when planned properly. Alternate, shorter routes than what you intend to hike are abundant in Acadia... your hiking plan can include them as contingencies. Injuries can happen, let others know your planned route and timeframe... cell service is spotty in Acadia National Park. Remember: know your limits so you can push them, and DEFINITELY REMEMBER: what goes up must come down which includes you...
