Liverpool’s pre-season is over, and Andoni Iraola has already shown that this team could look completely different this season. After analysing the friendlies against Sunderland, Wrexham, Leeds United, Monaco and Como, the biggest takeaway is clear: Iraola isn’t simply trying to improve the old Liverpool. He is trying to change the way this team plays.
This video breaks down everything we learned from Liverpool’s entire pre-season, including the new tactical system, pressing, intensity, attacking patterns, defensive concerns, new signings and the young players pushing for first-team opportunities.
The results only tell part of the story. Liverpool looked exciting when the press clicked, winning the ball high and attacking quickly. But pre-season also exposed the biggest risk of Iraola’s football. When the intensity drops or the structure breaks, the spaces behind Liverpool’s midfield and full-backs can become dangerous.
The Leeds match was a perfect example. Liverpool showed flashes of exactly what this new team could become, but also why this tactical transformation could take time. The Premier League will punish any mistakes, and Iraola’s biggest challenge will be finding the balance between aggression and control.
Dominik Szoboszlai looks like one of the players most naturally suited to this system. His energy, pressing, versatility and ability to cover huge distances could make him the engine of Iraola’s Liverpool. If there is one player capable of connecting the midfield, press and attack, Szoboszlai might be him.
Then there is Florian Wirtz. The German playmaker remains one of Liverpool’s most important attacking weapons, and pre-season gave encouraging signs about how he could operate in a faster, more vertical system. The question is whether Iraola can build the right structure around Wirtz and allow his creativity to flourish.
Alexander Isak is another player who could benefit massively. A more direct system could create more opportunities for him to attack space and get into dangerous goalscoring positions. But Liverpool will need consistency and fitness from their biggest attacking stars throughout the season.
The full-backs could also become one of the defining stories of this campaign. Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez bring pace, aggression and serious attacking ability. But when both push forward, Liverpool need the midfield and centre-backs to provide protection.
That puts even more responsibility on Ryan Gravenberch. His ability to carry the ball and cover ground could be crucial, but he will also need to help prevent Liverpool from becoming too open in transition.
At the back, Virgil van Dijk remains absolutely vital. Liverpool are entering a new tactical era, with new defenders and a more aggressive system. Van Dijk’s experience and leadership could be just as important as his defending. Alisson will also be crucial when Liverpool play higher up the pitch and leave more space behind the defence.
Pre-season also gave Liverpool fans a look at new arrivals including Jeremy Jacquet, Ronald Araújo and Victor Muñoz. Each brings something different to the squad, but there are still questions about experience, fitness, adaptation and how quickly they can contribute.
Liverpool’s youngsters were another major positive. Trey Nyoni, Rio Ngumoha, Kieran Morrison, Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Koumas all gave supporters something to talk about. Nyoni in particular continues to show impressive composure and quality, but Liverpool must be careful not to place too much pressure on young players if injuries begin to affect the squad.
That is ultimately what makes this season so fascinating.
Liverpool have the talent to become one of the most exciting teams in the Premier League. Iraola’s system could unlock players such as Szoboszlai, Wirtz, Isak, Frimpong and Kerkez. The pressing could become relentless. The transitions could become devastating.
But there are genuine risks too.
Can Liverpool maintain this intensity across an entire season? Can the new defensive structure cope against the Premier League’s best teams? Will the new signings settle quickly? Can Isak stay fit? Will Wirtz reach his full potential? And how long will it take for every player to fully understand Iraola’s demands?
Pre-season doesn’t give us every answer, but it does reveal the patterns. And the patterns suggest Liverpool are heading into a completely new era.
This season could be chaotic. It could be frustrating. But if Iraola gets it right, Liverpool could also become one of the most dangerous teams in England.
