I'm 33, living in a small city in China, with a home, a car, and some savings. So why do I still worry about money—and why have I become more careful about spending? Join me for an ordinary day with my family in Jincheng, Shanxi. Through my daughter's dance class, a trip to the local market, and time together at home, I share the worries behind our everyday life: uncertain income, mortgage and car payments, education, and caring for aging parents. My mother was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. We estimate that our family will need to pay around 200,000 RMB after health insurance reimbursement. Her illness has changed how I think about our savings and the future. This is my family's experience and my perspective on why some ordinary people in China feel under pressure these days. Do families in your country face similar worries? Has the way you think about spending and financial security changed in recent years? I'm Wei.
