In the last video, we decompiled and recompiled Poker Smash from the Xbox Live Arcade. Today, we're doing the same thing with OutRun, but this one came with a ton of challenges!
Watch as I spend days trying to fix a persistent audio crackling bug that Claude AI just couldn't figure out on its own.
AI isn't infallible, and I wanted to show you what a difficult port looks like when the human touch is absolutely necessary to cross the finish line. We also answer your comments and questions from the last recomp video, including whether Claude is still letting me do this, the total cost of running these sessions, and why I didn't just use a fleet of AI agents to automate the work.
NOTE: The terms decomp, recomp and static recompilation are often used interchangeably - and I'm as guilty as anyone for it. Decompilation is where you return human readable source code from the process. The Deluxe Galaga 2026 project I'm involved with is exactly that. We have source code from a long dead game now. RECOMP or "static recompilation" translates game code from one system to another. What I'm doing here (and with my other experiments) is recompilation. In some cases, there are tools that have already been built (like ReXGlue) that can help us do this quicker - and in other cases, it requires much more lifting (like porting from Switch, PS3, etc to PC). I apologize for the confusion and I'll do my best to ensure I use proper terminology.
