Brand New Day cuts Peter Parker in half. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man chooses to be only Spider-Man, and the whole movie shows why that can’t work. That’s why Spider-Man: Brand New Day finally feels like a Spider-Man comic.
Spoiler warning: this video covers the full plot of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, including the ending.
After No Way Home, the world forgot Peter Parker. In Brand New Day, he keeps it that way by choice. In this video essay, I break down how Destin Daniel Cretton and writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers built the most comic-accurate Spider-Man movie of the Holland era, and why it goes much deeper than the suit, the Easter eggs and the comic book panel shots.
We look at how the movie fixes the most hated Spider-Man comic, One More Day, by turning Peter’s deal into a choice he has to live with. We look at the dramatic irony of MJ and Ned forgetting him, the three times the movie refuses to give Peter his happy ending, the Parker Luck, and the letter scene between Tom Holland and Zendaya. We also cover the swinging inspired by Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man games, the 420fps action photography, and Michael Giacchino’s broken Spider-Man theme.
Then there’s the spider mutation. We compare the organic webs to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man and the comic storyline The Other, and look at the inhibitor chip, the Bruce Banner and savage Hulk scenes, and why Jean Grey (Sadie Sink) and the Punisher (Jon Bernthal) work as two mirrors of what Peter could become. Plus the Scorpion, Jean DeWolff, Damage Control, Aunt May’s “deepest responsibility” line, and that final handshake with Ned (Jacob Batalon).
If you loved Brand New Day, or want to know why it feels so different from Homecoming, Far From Home and No Way Home, this one’s for you.
