Before becoming a Christian, Wang Yi was already a well-known public intellectual. After his conversion, he quickly produced a substantial body of writings, devoted himself to pastoral ministry, and courageously spoke out against the wrongdoings of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). He suffered persecution as a result. His courage and faithfulness are truly remarkable, and God has used him mightily. Regarding those who criticize Wang Yi for “criticizing the government,” consider the example of John the Baptist. John rebuked King Herod for marrying his brother’s wife and was eventually executed for doing so. Yet Jesus declared, “Among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist.” This demonstrates that confronting sin and upholding righteousness are consistent with God’s will. As the salt and light of the world, the church has a responsibility to bear witness in a corrupt society. It must not compromise or retreat out of fear of persecution. True faith is demonstrated through the courage to sacrifice for Christ. Church history shows that persecution has often strengthened the church and made it more vibrant. God calls His church to stand firm and overcome in spiritual warfare, rather than hide away in pursuit of safety and comfort. The example of Zion Church illustrates that even maintaining a low profile does not necessarily protect a church from government suppression. Although China officially claims to guarantee religious freedom, its situation differs from that of countries governed by extremist interpretations of Islam, and the two should not be simplistically equated. Ultimately, Christians must come before God in prayer and seriously examine themselves: Does retreating out of weakness and fear bring glory to God, or does it bring dishonor to His name?
