The Bryson fire above Malibu, California, triggered evacuation orders as powerful Santa Ana winds drove flames through dry brush in the Santa Monica Mountains. The fire ignited on Thursday, October 15, and grew rapidly, prompting emergency crews to evacuate a juvenile detention facility and warn residents across nearby canyons. By Friday night, the fire covered approximately 146 acres and was 39% contained, with no homes reported lost. Dangerous conditions continued across Southern California as temperatures approached 100 degrees, humidity dropped into the single digits, and mountain gusts were forecast to reach 75 mph. More than 7,000 structures remained within the Bryson fire's threat zone, while precautionary power shutoffs affected customers in Los Angeles and Ventura counties. In this video, we cover the Bryson fire's rapid growth, evacuations around Malibu, extreme Santa Ana winds, and the wider wildfire threat stretching from Azusa to San Diego County. Firefighters also battled the Peak fire in Azusa, the Norte fire near San Clemente, and the Henderson fire at Camp Pendleton. State officials staged additional firefighting resources as utilities continued safety shutoffs. Meanwhile, the prospect of a wet winter raised concerns about mudslides and debris flows across hillsides burned during previous fires. As of Friday night, evacuation orders remained in place in parts of Malibu, and a Red Flag warning was expected to continue until Saturday evening. The causes of the fires remained under investigation. Global Weather covers natural disasters and extreme weather events as they develop, using sourced reporting and avoiding unsupported speculation.
