Set during the celebration of Dussehra, when the effigy of Ravana is burned as a symbol of the destruction of evil, the story creates a striking contrast between religious ritual and the darker realities of human behavior.
At the center of the narrative is Ratnama, a poor young woman living under the weight of poverty, social prejudice, humiliation, and loss. Around her, the village prepares for celebration, worship, purification, and the symbolic defeat of evil.
But as the story unfolds, Jilani Bano exposes a disturbing contradiction. Those who speak of sin, purity, salvation, and spiritual liberation may themselves carry greed, desire, hypocrisy, and exploitation within them.
The meaning of “Nirvan” therefore becomes deeply ironic. Can rituals truly purify the human soul when cruelty and injustice remain alive beneath them?
Through religion, class, poverty, desire, social hierarchy, and human vulnerability, Jilani Bano creates a story that questions the difference between outward piety and inner morality.
Listen to Jilani Bano’s memorable Urdu afsana “Nirvan” in the voice of Arif Bahalim.
