Elizabeth Ann Seton was born in New York City in 1774. After her husband died in Italy in 1803, she returned home a widow with five children and entered the Catholic Church in 1805—a decision that reshaped her life and livelihood. This historically grounded biography follows Seton from New York to Baltimore and, in 1809, to Emmitsburg, Maryland. There she established a school and founded the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph’s, laying enduring foundations for Catholic education and religious life in the United States. In 1975, Elizabeth Ann Seton became the first person born in the United States to be canonized by the Catholic Church. ⏱️ CHAPTERS: 00:00 Opening 00:35 Introduction 01:10 A Child of New York 02:23 The House on Wall Street 03:32 The Fortune Breaks Apart 04:45 Quarantine at the Harbor 06:01 The Faith She Had Been Warned Against 07:22 A Prayer Without Conditions 08:42 A Widow Needs Work 10:03 The Road Beyond Baltimore 11:27 The Stone House 12:50 Winter Enters the Rooms 14:10 Snow on the Blankets 15:05 The Archbishop’s Verdict 16:02 The White House Opens 17:19 A Work That Outlived Her 18:41 The First American-Born Saint 19:55 What Her School Still Teaches 21:04 Conclusion 💬 Which decision carried the greater risk for Elizabeth: entering the Catholic Church in New York, or taking her children to build a school in Maryland? 📚 SOURCES: • 14 September 1975: Canonization of Elisabeth Ann Seton, Foundress of the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Joseph's — Vatican: https://www.vatican.va/holy_father/pa... • CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: St. Elizabeth Ann Seton — New Advent: https://www.newadvent.org/cathen/1373... • Seton Hall film on legacy of 1st American-born saint — Aleteia: https://aleteia.org/2025/04/29/seton-...
