What if playing in tune isn’t simply about finding the right notes?
In Exercise No. 5 of Dounis’s Daily Dozen, we explore the fascinating world of expressive intonation and how subtle adjustments in pitch can transform musical expression.
Violinists navigate three principal tuning systems:
Just Intonation: Pure harmonic intervals based on natural frequency ratios.
Pythagorean Intonation: Built on pure fifths and often associated with expressive melodic tuning.
Equal Temperament: Twelve equally spaced semitones, as commonly used on the piano.
I’m interpreting this exercise as expanding upon the concept of leading tones, and function of a given accidental - exploring how a note’s melodic direction and harmonic “function” influence its placement on the fingerboard. Notes leading upward may be placed slightly higher, while those resolving downward may be placed lower, always guided by musical context and careful listening.
The goal isn’t simply to play in tune, but to make intonation an expressive musical tool.
