Kurram Tangi Dam is one of Pakistan’s long-discussed multipurpose water and hydropower projects, with a history stretching back several decades. Located in North Waziristan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the project has been planned to provide water storage, irrigation, hydropower generation and wider economic benefits to the region. But the story of Kurram Tangi Dam is much bigger than a construction project. The idea of developing the water resources of the Kurram River dates back to the mid-20th century. Over the decades, feasibility studies were conducted, project designs were revised, funding arrangements were developed, and construction plans were repeatedly delayed by financial, administrative, design and security-related challenges. In this documentary, we explore the complete history of Kurram Tangi Dam, from its early concept to the modern construction phase. The video covers: • The origins of the Kurram Tangi Dam idea • Early surveys and feasibility studies • The 2005 PC-I approval • Why the project faced long delays • The role of security challenges in North Waziristan • The division of the project into Stage-I and Stage-II • The Kaitu Weir component • USAID’s financial support for Stage-I • The 2016 construction phase • The 2017 groundbreaking ceremony • The planned 1.2 MAF gross water storage capacity • The planned 83.4 MW hydropower capacity • The irrigation potential of more than 84,000 acres of new land • The wider command area of approximately 362,000 acres • Rising project costs and revised estimates • The difference between Stage-I and the complete dam project • The current status of the project • Why this decades-old project remains important for Pakistan’s water and agricultural future Kurram Tangi Dam has been envisioned as a multipurpose project, meaning its importance is not limited to electricity generation. Its objectives include water storage, irrigation development, hydropower generation and socioeconomic development of the surrounding region. According to project documents, the complete project has been associated with approximately 1.2 million acre-feet of gross storage, around 0.9 million acre-feet of live storage, and approximately 83.4 MW of installed hydropower capacity. The irrigation component is also significant, with plans involving approximately 84,380 acres of new irrigation and supplementary water for existing command areas. However, one of the most important parts of this story is the difference between the planned benefits and the actual implementation status. Project targets and completion dates have changed over time, while revised costs have increased considerably from the original estimates. This documentary therefore focuses on the historical record and available official information rather than presenting the project simply as a success or failure. From the first ideas of harnessing the Kurram River to the modern construction site, this is the story of a Pakistani mega project that has remained on the drawing board, in planning documents and on construction sites for generations. Kurram Tangi Dam — one river, one dream, several decades, and a story that is still being written. 📌 Topics Covered: Kurram Tangi Dam Pakistan, Kurram Tangi Dam history, Kurram Tangi Dam construction, Kaitu Weir, North Waziristan development, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa dams, Pakistan dams, Pakistan hydropower projects, water storage Pakistan, irrigation projects Pakistan, WAPDA projects, USAID Pakistan projects, Pakistan mega projects. ⚠️ Disclaimer: This video is created for educational and documentary purposes.
