The Sanskrit word Bhuvana means "world" or "universe," while Ishwari means "Supreme Goddess" or "Ruler." Thus, Bhuvaneshwari means "She who rules all the worlds." She is revered as the Divine Mother of the Universe and the primordial power that creates, sustains, and governs the cosmos. In the Lalita Sahasranama, the 294th divine name of the Goddess is Bhuvaneshwari. She is also known as Sarvalokeshwari, Rajarajeshwari, Mahamaya, Sarvarupa, and Vishvarupa. According to Shakta and Tantric traditions, Lord Brahma performed intense penance before creation. Pleased with his devotion, Goddess Bhuvaneshwari manifested as the supreme creative power and enabled the creation of the three worlds. She is therefore regarded as the source of all creation and the cosmic energy behind the universe. Shakta philosophy teaches that all existence is a manifestation of Bhuvaneshwari. Goddesses such as Saraswati, Lakshmi, Kali, and Gayatri are understood to be different expressions of the same Supreme Divine Mother. She is depicted with four arms, seated on a lotus throne. Her right hands display the Abhaya and Varada Mudras, while her left hands hold a noose (Pasha) and an elephant goad (Ankusha). She represents compassion, wisdom, divine sovereignty, and the infinite Akasha (Space), the source from which all creation emerges. Her sacred bija mantra is "Hreem" (ह्रीं), known as the Maya Bija. A commonly recited mantra is: "Om Hreem Bhuvaneshwaryai Namah." In Tantric practice, Bhuvaneshwari is believed to grant success, prosperity, fearlessness, inner peace, spiritual growth, material abundance, divine protection, and, under proper guidance, even the Ashta Siddhis. Some yogic traditions associate her worship with the Sahasrara (Crown) Chakra, though this correspondence varies across lineages. Lord Shiva's associated form is known as Bhuvaneshwara. Prominent temples dedicated to the Goddess include the Sri Bhuvaneshwari Amman Temple in Pudukkottai, Tamil Nadu, where she is worshipped with the Sri Chakra Maha Meru, and the ancient Sri Bhuvaneshwari Amman Temple at Sudumalai near Jaffna, Sri Lanka. Bhuvaneshwari Mahavidya symbolizes infinite compassion, cosmic sovereignty, creative power, and universal motherhood.
