VOCES8: and the swallow by Caroline Shaw

VOCES8 performs Caroline Shaw's setting of text from Psalm 84, 'and the swallow', at the VOCES8 Centre in London. Written in 2017, 'and the swallow' is one of Shaw's most evocative choral miniatures, setting verses from Psalm 84 that express a longing for home, refuge and the presence of God. Inspired in part by the global refugee crisis, Shaw has described the image of the sparrow finding a house and the swallow finding her nest as a symbol of the universal desire to find safety and protect one's family. The work unfolds in Shaw's characteristically luminous style, blending delicate harmonies, fluid textures and subtle vocal effects. In its closing moments, the choir evokes the sound of gentle autumn rain, bringing this intimate meditation to a peaceful conclusion.
