I didn’t know how to speak up for myself for a long time Growing up as second gen (with immigrant parents) I played it small. I thought it was safer for me to be quiet and not be seen. I was quiet, believed that no one really cared about what I had to say for a long time growing up or that I shouldn’t speak up to avoid getting into trouble That was something I had to reprogram, change and unlearn I then was able to speak up but in ways I didn’t really like and now that I look back - that was the greatest baby step for me. And it was so necessary for me to get to where I am today. Where I can say what I need, give myself the time and grace to think about my needs, to change my mind and even just say “no”. I look back now at these phases in my life as necessary baby steps to help me get to where I am today. And I am so thankful. If you’re struggling to speak up or share your thoughts especially as someone with immigrant parents, it makes sense. And it doesn’t always need to be this way. But what you do now and how you view this will also be very important. So much of our culture, dynamics and expectations may have prevented that from happening I hope you know that you can even start in a small step today to say more of what you need, what you’re thinking and what you’re feeling. You can use my free 3 scripts to start to say “no” or “not right now” to simply start buying yourself more time to just even THINK about what you need and what you’re thoughts are. ➡️ The link is in my bio to grab the free three scripts to start using today.
