THE LEDGER & THE PLOW
Songs for the Working Soul
There are two ways to measure the worth of a country.
One is written in ledgers — profits, stock prices, quarterly reports, balance sheets and numbers on a page.
The other is written in the soil — calloused hands, long days, worn boots, family farms, factory floors, service trucks, small businesses and generations of people who simply get up every morning and go to work.
“The Ledger & The Plow” is for them.
It is a song about the people who plant the seed, repair the machine, build the road, stock the shelf, raise the family and keep the country moving — often while somebody far away decides what their labor is worth.
The ledger has its place.
But without the plow, the wrench, the hammer, the kitchen, the truck, the classroom and the hands of ordinary working people…
there isn't much left to put in the ledger.
This isn't about Republican versus Democrat.
It isn't about rich versus poor.
It's about remembering something much simpler:
An economy should serve the people who make it work — not expect the people to spend their lives serving the economy.
For the farmer watching another sunrise from the tractor seat.
For the mechanic underneath the machine.
For the waitress finishing another double.
For the tradesman answering one more service call.
For the family wondering whether this month's paycheck will stretch far enough.
This one's for the working soul.
