Anthony Bourdain travels to Kenya alongside comedian W. Kamau Bell, turning the journey into a deeper exploration of identity, belonging, and the complicated connection between African-American identity and Africa. In Nairobi, Anthony and Kamau look beyond the tourist image of Kenya, confronting the legacy of colonialism and the realities shaping modern Kenyan life. Their conversations reveal a country that is dynamic, complex, and constantly changing. Bourdain and Kamau also explore Nairobi’s secondhand clothing industry and its devastating impact on Kenya’s once-thriving textile sector. In Kibera, they meet artists and comedians who are determined to tell their own stories rather than allow outsiders to define their community. Anthony also joins conversations about inequality, LGBT rights, and the challenges created by foreign aid and the so-called “white savior” mentality. The journey eventually takes Anthony and Kamau into Kenya’s wilderness, where they encounter giraffes, elephants, lions, and endangered rhinos at Lewa Conservancy. Anthony explores the fight against poaching and the difficult balance between protecting wildlife and respecting the communities that have lived on the land for generations. Through the Maasai and their traditions, Anthony discovers why conservation can only succeed when local people are empowered to protect both their culture and their natural world.
