Ask almost anyone how to cool a house without electricity and you'll hear the same short list: open the windows, plant a tree, paint the roof white. All good advice. But almost nobody says the most powerful thing: the shape of the house itself can do much of the work.
In the hills of Fujian, China, families have lived in ring-shaped earth buildings called tulou for centuries, in a hot, humid climate, long before air conditioning existed. When researchers measured one famous tulou, the courtyard air ran about 2 degrees Celsius milder than outside, and the thick earth walls moderated both temperature and moisture. Two degrees isn't magic, but it's real, it's free, and it comes from geometry, mass, and airflow.
In this video, I show you how a small, tulou-inspired house, a "mini tulou," uses its shape to stay cooler, with real numbers. I'm also honest about where it fails, because it does. The roof section reveals the biggest mistake people make when they copy this idea.
We cover:
✅ What "without electricity" can honestly mean
✅ The mini tulou plan: a full layout with dimensions
✅ What researchers actually measured (and the limits of the data)
✅ Mechanism one: thermal mass and time lag
✅ Mechanism two: the courtyard as a cool-air reservoir and shade machine
✅ Mechanism three: stack and cross ventilation, with real airflow math
✅ Mechanism four: where you put the openings, and orientation
✅ The roof: the hidden heat gate
✅ Where this fails: humidity, heat waves, scale, and habits
✅ A design recipe for a cooler mini tulou
✅ Materials, costs, and an illustrative savings example
✅ Durability, codes, and moisture
✅ Who this is for, plus a checklist before you build
✅ My honest final verdict
This isn't a hype video. Passive cooling aims for comfortable, not cold, and the savings are modest. The dimensions and cost figures here are illustrative planning numbers, not quotes.

DISCLAIMER: This video is for general informational and educational purposes only and does not constitute architectural, engineering, structural, financial, or legal advice. Temperature measurements cited come from published field studies of specific buildings and will not predict results in any other building, climate, or season. Dimensions, airflow calculations, shading calculations, and cost and savings figures are illustrative estimates, and actual results vary significantly with climate, humidity, materials, construction quality, occupant behavior, and local building codes. Passive cooling does not guarantee indoor comfort in all conditions, particularly during humid heat waves. Earth-wall construction requires careful moisture protection and structural engineering. Always consult a licensed architect, a structural engineer, and your local building authority before designing, purchasing, or constructing any home.
