The Western Indian Ocean is one of the world's most strategically important maritime regions—and it is facing a growing security challenge. From the resurgence of Somali piracy and the captivity of seafarers to the ongoing Red Sea crisis, Persian Gulf tensions, illegal fishing, marine pollution and geopolitical competition, the security landscape is rapidly changing. In Episode 1 Season 2 of the Blue Security Africa Podcast, we take a people-driven look at the opportunities and challenges shaping the Western Indian Ocean. Our discussion explores: 🔹 Why is maritime insecurity increasing in the Western Indian Ocean? 🔹 What is driving the resurgence of Somali piracy? 🔹 How effective is the region's Regional Maritime Security Architecture (RMSA)? 🔹 Is there enough coordination between African states, the EU, USA, IMO and other international partners? 🔹 What role should Western Indian Ocean littoral and island states play? 🔹 How can maritime domain awareness improve regional security? 🔹 Are the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden and Persian Gulf crises interconnected? 🔹 What can research contribute to better maritime security policy? 🔹 Can the Western Indian Ocean achieve a sustainable return to safer seas? We are joined by Raj Mohabeer of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) and Kate Sullivan, who bring perspectives from regional maritime cooperation, research, policy and operational preparedness. The Western Indian Ocean is more than a geopolitical arena—it is home to millions of people whose livelihoods, trade and future depend on a safe and secure ocean. Watch, listen and join the conversation on the future of maritime security in Africa and the Western Indian Ocean. #BlueSecurityAfrica #IndianOcean #WesternIndianOcean #MaritimeSecurity #SomaliPiracy #RedSea #BlueEconomy #OceanGovernance #MaritimeSafety #IndianOceanCommission #Africa #Seafarers
