During our Maryland-to-Idaho road trip, we took a very special side trip through Utah to visit some of the actual filming locations from the 1984 classic Footloose! This wasn't just another sightseeing stop. My wife has wanted to visit these locations for more than 30 years, and we finally got the chance to make it happen. Our first stop was the famous Lehi Roller Mills, the working flour mill seen in Footloose, where Kevin Bacon's character Ren McCormack works and handles those bags of flour. From there, we visited the church used in the movie, which is still an active Presbyterian church and school today. We were fortunate enough to receive permission to go inside and take some pictures—a really cool experience and one we greatly appreciated. Then we went looking for the location of another memorable scene—the place where Ren comes screeching in with his yellow Volkswagen Beetle, jumps out frustrated, and launches into that famous dance sequence. Unfortunately, the original factory is no longer standing. But that's where our Footloose adventure took an unexpected turn! Metal from the demolished factory was donated to Summit Harley-Davidson, located across the street from the original site. And being a Harley guy, you KNOW we had to check that out! The dealership was HUGE and even had a restaurant attached to it. Somehow, even on my wife's Footloose adventure, Harley-Davidson managed to find its way into our trip. 😂 For two Gen X kids, getting to walk around locations from a movie we grew up with was pretty darn cool. But the best part for me was watching my wife finally visit a place she'd dreamed about seeing for more than three decades. Sometimes the best memories happen when you get off the highway and take the side trip. This was definitely one of them.
