MythBusters — S2 E4 “Sinking Titanic, Goldfish Memory, Trombone Explosion” — Aired February 22, 2004 Three legends, one wildly ambitious episode. Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman start with an old sailor’s warning: when a big ship goes under, it drags everyone nearby down with it. To test it, they build a 10 foot rig with a bubbler and a weighted box, hunt the Bay Area for a tugboat they can afford to sink, and weld in valves to let the water do its work, all while Jamie sweats the cold, murky depths and Adam gets rather close to the action. Then the two turn into rival fish trainers, each with a tank, a strategy and a serious competitive streak, as they try to find out whether a goldfish’s memory really lasts only 3 seconds. Between the chaos, a hydrometer, a pet shop, a maze and a lot of fish food, bragging rights are on the line. Finally, a musical myth with explosive potential: an orchestra, the 1812 Overture, a trombone and a mute packed with pyrotechnics. Buster the crash test dummy takes the conductor’s spot, pyro expert Jack Morocco joins the crew, and the Lexan blast screen gets a real workout. Plenty of bubbles, bangs, shrapnel and unexpected results, with Robert Lee narrating every glorious minute. Watch to see what happens when science meets a shipwreck, a fishbowl and a brass instrument.
