What should you know about money before you begin earning a regular salary?
In this practical session at the Craft Innovation Hub (CIH) SIWES Career & Workplace Readiness Series, Associate Professor A. T. Lawal, Dean of Student Affairs, Al-Hikmah University, speaks to students and young people about building financial intelligence early, before greater income and financial responsibilities arrive.
The session, held on 3 October 2026 at Craft Innovation Hub, Agbo Oba, Ilorin, explores some of the financial mistakes that can affect young people as they transition from school into employment, freelancing, business and independent adult life.
Key issues covered include:
Building financial discipline before earning a regular salary
Understanding the difference between saving and investing
Creating a realistic personal budget
Managing lifestyle pressure and unnecessary spending
The dangers of irresponsible borrowing
Understanding investment risk, liquidity and potential returns
Recognising Ponzi schemes and fake investment platforms
Developing habits that support long-term financial stability
Making responsible financial decisions as a student, graduate or young professional
The practical focus of the session encourages participants to begin thinking beyond simply earning money to understanding how to manage, protect and grow it responsibly.
