This is the Khumbu Icefall. It’s probably the most famous—or maybe infamous—stretch of glacier on Earth. And when people think of glaciers, they usually picture these giant sheets of ice frozen in place high on mountains or across the poles. But glaciers aren’t really frozen in place at all. Under their immense weight, they slowly flow downhill. And this movement causes them to crack and break. Immense crevasses open in the ice, some so deep that they seem bottomless. Others narrow toward the bottom, meaning that instead of falling all the way through, a person can become wedged between two walls of ice. Then there are also seracs, which are enormous towers and blocks of ice, sometimes the size of buildings, that can be completely unstable. The result of all of this is essentially a moving obstacle course of crevasses, collapsing ice and constantly shifting terrain. Of course, that’s if you found yourself on one. And nowhere is this more true than the Khumbu Icefall, because anyone attempting to climb Mount Everest from the Nepalese side has no other choice but to go right through it. So, in this video, we’re going to look at some of the harrowing incidents that have occurred here, the icefall’s inextricable link to Everest, and the men who repeatedly risk their lives crossing it so that others can reach the summit.
