How far would you have to travel to reach a town where the sea itself locks the door behind you for eight months of the year? On the east coast of Greenland, at the mouth of the largest fjord system on the surface of the planet, between three and four hundred people live further from any other town than almost anyone else on Earth. The name means, roughly, "the people of the big houses". But before there was a town here there was only a decision, and it was made in Copenhagen and Oslo rather than in the Arctic. In 1925 a Danish explorer was handed an assignment, and around eighty Inuit settlers were moved north to this stretch of coastline to found a settlement whose original purpose had very little to do with them.
