Every summer you quietly rebuy the same shelf: the bug spray, the plug-in refills, the zapper. Japan mostly skipped all of it for one green mosquito coil that costs under a dollar a night.
This is the story of katori senko, the pyrethrum coil a single Japanese household gave the world. A bag of daisy seeds reaches Eiichiro Ueyama in 1885. In 1895 his wife, Yuki, turns a 40-minute incense stick into a spiral that burns about 7 hours. The pyrethrins in that thin smoke, drawn from the Dalmatian chrysanthemum, are what actually keep mosquitoes off, and a field trial shows it is real, not folklore. It runs about $24.99 for a box of 30, roughly 80 cents a coil. One honest limit and all: it is a repellent and knockdown aid for a porch, a tent, a sheltered corner, not a force field over your whole yard, and because it works by smoke you give it real airflow. The one thing almost everyone gets wrong is where they put it.
