He died in 1938 at just 34 years old — never knowing his melody would one day represent an entire nation's unspoken identity on the world stage. ② The lyrics are written in Classical Chinese (文言文), not modern Mandarin. The final line — "青天白日滿地紅" (Blue Sky, White Sun, and a Wholly Red Earth) — literally describes the flag of the Republic of China. It's a song that paints its own flag with words. ③ At the Olympics, the Flag Anthem is officially called "Anthem of the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee" and uses DIFFERENT lyrics — rewritten to remove all national references. The original lyrics about "descendants of Yan and Huang" and "heroes of East Asia" were replaced with generic Olympic phrases. The melody survived. The soul was edited out. ④ Taiwan's actual national anthem ("San Min Chu-i" / 三民主義) is based on a 1924 speech by Sun Yat-sen.
