One Tiger Wrecked 25 Vehicles at Villers-Bocage. Then It Burned Villers-Bocage, the thirteenth of June, nineteen forty-four. One Tiger tank drove the length of a stalled British column and wrecked better than twenty-five vehicles in about fifteen minutes. Laid out here: 13 June 1944: one Tiger I under Michael Wittmann wrecked over 25 vehicles of the British 7th Armoured Division in about 15 minutes near Point 213. The 88mm gun and gunner Balthasar Woll drove shells through Cromwell hulls while British 75mm rounds skated off the Tiger's front plate. Inside the narrow streets the Tiger's strengths died: range collapsed, the hull could barely turn, and 6-pounders and riflemen waited point-blank in doorways and upper windows. Wittmann's own Tiger was stopped by a 6-pounder track hit and abandoned; his afternoon assault with fresh Panzer IVs and Tigers was thrown back, losing 6 Tigers and 2 Panzer IVs. Lieutenant Cotton and Sergeant Bramall burned the stopped German tanks by hand with petrol and blankets so they could never be recovered. The wreck report on Villers-Bocage is in the pinned comment.
