Build an electronic dice circuit on a breadboard using the NE555 timer IC and CD4017 decade counter. Perfect for beginners learning timers, counters, and LED sequencing. Episode 4 of the DigitalLab Beginner Electronics Series. The NE555 generates clock pulses, and the CD4017 uses them to step through its LED outputs one by one. We build it in stages, look at how the reset input works, and test the circuit live on a breadboard. 📖 Full circuit diagram and article: [ADD BLOG POST URL HERE] ⏱️ Chapters 00:00 Intro 00:10 Project Overview 01:58 Stage 1 – NE555 Oscillator (Clock Pulse Generator) 06:36 Stage 2 – Adding the CD4017 Decade Counter 11:13 Stage 2 – Wiring and Demo 13:35 Final Stage – Completing the Electronic Dice 17:00 Final Stage – Demo 19:32 Conclusion 🔧 Components Used NE555 timer IC CD4017BE decade counter IC 6 × LEDs 6 × 1 kΩ current-limiting resistors 10 kΩ and 47 kΩ resistors 1 µF timing capacitor 100 nF decoupling capacitor Push button 9V power supply Breadboard and jumper wires 🎓 What You Will Learn How the NE555 generates clock pulses How the CD4017 activates outputs in sequence How to connect LEDs to a decade counter How the reset and clock-inhibit inputs work Basic breadboard wiring and troubleshooting ⚠️ Note: This beginner version demonstrates sequential LED counting. The automatic reset that limits the count to exactly six states isn’t reliable yet, so the circuit may count past six. An improved version may follow. 🔔 Subscribe to DigitalLab for more DIY circuits, electronics tutorials, ESP32 projects, and hands-on experiments.
