Russia's fuel crisis is deepening, and Vladimir Putin's latest diesel deal with the United States could make the situation even worse.
As we've discussed previously, the USA has relaxed sanctions on Russian diesel imports to help ease global fuel shortages and bring down American fuel prices. But while this sounds like good news for Russia, the timing could hardly be worse.
Ukrainian drone attacks have caused extensive damage to Russia's oil refineries, diesel production has fallen sharply, fuel prices have surged, and shortages have affected large parts of the country.
Russia was even forced to introduce emergency restrictions on diesel exports to protect its own domestic supplies. So why is Putin now reopening exports to America?
In this video, I examine Russia's worsening fuel crisis, the damage to its refining industry, the economic consequences of higher diesel prices and why this agreement could benefit American consumers while creating additional problems for Russian businesses and households.
I also examine why the relaxation of US sanctions may only be temporary, potentially leaving Russia with little long-term benefit from the deal.
Could Russia end up helping America solve its fuel problems while making its own economic crisis even worse?
