Why do we dream? Every night your eyes dart, your muscles go limp, and your brain puts on a show you mostly forget. Even the journal Science lists it as an open question, so we test the six big theories of dreaming against the evidence. First we take apart REM sleep: an eight-year-old wired up in a 1951 Chicago lab, the sleep cycles that bring REM back all night, and Jouvet's cats that acted out their dreams when the brainstem's safety lock was switched off. Then we put Freud, activation-synthesis, threat rehearsal, memory replay in rats, the Tetris study with amnesic players, and an idea borrowed from AI on trial. 00:00 Tonight, your brain puts on a show 00:25 Why we dream is still an open question 00:47 Chicago, 1951: eyes that moved in sleep 01:18 REM sleep gets its name 01:39 Sleep cycles: REM's nightly schedule 02:02 Paralyzed every night: REM atonia 02:24 Jouvet's cats act out their dreams 02:42 When the safety lock fails (REM sleep behavior disorder) 03:18 The alarm chemical goes silent 03:42 Why we forget most dreams 03:59 The spec sheet of dreaming 04:13 Theory 1: Freud's hidden wishes 04:43 Theory 2: activation-synthesis 05:23 Theory 3: rehearsing danger 05:54 Theory 4: rats replay the maze 06:31 The Tetris study 06:58 Amnesic players still dreamed of blocks 07:24 Theory 5: overnight therapy for feelings 07:56 Theory 6: dreams as AI-style noise 08:22 Do animals dream? Who else has REM 08:53 Newborns: hours of REM a day 09:16 Myths: only in REM? Some people never dream? 09:40 Myth: dreams flash by in seconds 09:56 The scorecard: which dream theory wins? 10:23 Tonight, the show goes on Sources: NHLBI, Sleep Phases and Stages: https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/slee...
